You sit down in the chair. The barber puts the cape on, looks at you in the mirror, and asks: "What are we doing today?" And your mind goes blank. You want a fade — but what kind? Short on the sides — but how short? Textured on top — but what does that mean exactly?
Bad communication is the number one reason people leave the barbershop disappointed. It's almost never the barber's fault and almost never the client's fault — it's just a language gap. This guide closes that gap.
Start with the Guard Number
Clipper guards are numbered 0–8 and control how much hair is left after cutting. This is the most important number to know. The lower the number, the shorter the cut.
When you tell a barber your guard number, they know exactly how much hair to leave. "A 3 on the sides" means 9mm on the sides. "A 2 on top with a 1 on the sides" is specific and unambiguous. Learn these numbers once and you'll never miscommunicate a length again.
Choose Your Fade Type
A fade is a gradual blend from longer hair on top to shorter hair on the sides, eventually reaching the skin. The type of fade tells the barber where on the head the blend starts.
- Low fade: The blend starts low — just above the ear and near the neckline. Clean and conservative. Works with almost any outfit.
- Mid fade: The blend starts midway up the sides — above the ear but below the temple. The most popular choice right now.
- High fade (temple fade): The blend starts high, at the temples. More dramatic, creates a strong contrast between top and sides.
- Skin/bald fade: The fade goes all the way down to bare skin. Can be combined with any of the above — "low skin fade" or "high skin fade."
- Taper: Similar to a fade but stops just above the hairline — some hair remains visible at the neckline. More traditional.
Most requested right now: Mid fade or low skin fade with a textured top. Safe, versatile, and works on most face shapes.
Neckline: Rounded, Squared, or Tapered?
The neckline is the back-bottom of your haircut and it makes a bigger difference than most people realise.
- Rounded (natural): The neckline follows the natural curve of your head. Soft, subtle — grows out cleanly. Best for afro-textured hair.
- Squared (blocked): Sharp 90-degree corners. Looks very clean and precise right after the cut. Can look ragged as it grows.
- Tapered: The hair fades into the neck naturally, with no defined line. The lowest-maintenance option — looks good for longer between cuts.
What Do You Want on Top?
After you've handled the sides and neckline, describe what you want on top. A few ways to say it:
- "Leave it natural, just trim the length" — the barber will scissor-cut the top to remove bulk while keeping the shape.
- "Textured on top" — they'll use scissors or a razor to break up the ends and add movement. Great for afro-textured hair.
- "Crop it" — shorter on top, usually with a hard part or defined line at the front (a French crop).
- "Leave it — just do the sides" — if your top is already the right length, tell them. Don't let a barber touch the top out of habit.
When in Doubt: Show a Photo
The single most effective tool you have is a reference photo. Pull up a haircut you like from Instagram, Pinterest, or anywhere else, and show it to the barber before they start. A photo eliminates almost all ambiguity.
A few caveats:
- Pick photos of people with similar hair texture to yours. A cut that works on straight hair may not translate to coily or kinky hair without modification.
- A good barber will tell you honestly if a cut suits your hair type, head shape, or current length. Trust that feedback.
- Show the photo before the clippers come out, not halfway through.
A Simple Script That Works Every Time
If you want a reliable, good-looking cut every time, this phrase covers everything:
"Low skin fade, guard 3 on top, textured, and a tapered neckline."
That's it. Five words — fade type, guard number, top style, neckline. Adjust each one to your preference and you'll communicate with any barber in any city without confusion.
